Scott Powell, MD is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with 35+ years of experience specializing in sports medicine, orthopedic surgery, and injury prevention. His practice focuses on minimally invasive procedures, joint preservation, and advanced recovery techniques for athletes and active individuals.
He has served as team physician for the U.S. Men's Under-20 and Women's National Soccer Teams.
Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Powell has played a vital role in advancing orthopedic surgery. He is a former Board Member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America (2009–2012), having served on the Education, Fellowship, and Program Committees.
He is also active in the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine, contributing to research, technology, and medical education.
Long before his career in medicine, Dr. Powell made his mark in an entirely different world. While studying at Columbia College, he co-founded the rock and roll revival band Sha Na Na, which quickly gained national and international fame.
Dr. Powell was part of music history, performing at Woodstock in 1969 just before Jimi Hendrix. Sha Na Na's At the Hop was later featured in the Academy Award-winning documentary Woodstock (1970). The band's success led to international tours across Europe and Japan and appearances on major television shows.
Beyond music, Dr. Powell found success in Hollywood — starring in four seasons of Sha Na Na (1977–1981) and appearing in hit films like Grease (1978) and Caddyshack (1980). The Grease soundtrack was nominated for Album of the Year at the 1979 Grammy Awards, losing to Saturday Night Fever.
Despite his success in entertainment, Dr. Powell's passion for science and medicine led him to leave the industry and return to Columbia University in 1980 to pursue a career in medicine — the same drive for performance that had defined his life on stage.
