Dr. Powell attended Columbia College where he was one of the founding members of the rock and roll band, Sha Na Na (view slideshow). He performed with the group at the Woodstock Festival, Fillmore East and West, in Europe and Japan, on the syndicated television series, Sha Na Na, and in the movies Woodstock, Grease and Caddyshack. He left the band in 1980 and returned to Columbia to take premedical courses.

He attended the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, completed Internship at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital and Residency in Orthopedics at Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City. He completed his Fellowship in Sports Medicine at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles, is Board Certified and has practiced at Kaiser
Permanente for the past twelve years. He recently founded Stetson Powell Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Burbank with partner Bill Stetson. In addition to a busy practice in Sports Medicine, Dr. Powell is active in the Arthroscopy Association of North America, serving on the Fellowship and Education Committees, the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine, serving on the Technology Committee, and and on the Council of Delegates, and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.
He has presented research at meetings in Hong Kong, Australia, Cuba and the United States. He is a member of the Medical Staff of US Soccer National Teams and is Team Physician for the United States Soccer Federation Women’s National Team. He is a member of the Medical Staff of the United States Olympic Committee. He is Associate Clinical Professor at the USC Keck School of Medicine and on the Board of Directors of United Cerebral Palsy.
